The morning of May 14th witnessed the grand opening of the 7th SNEC PV POWER EXPO at the south hall of Shanghai New International Expo Center (SNIEC). LI Baoshan, Secretary-General of Chinese Renewable Energy Society (CRES) and head of Material Department of Torch High Tech Industrial Development Center of the Ministry of Science and Technology, hosted the ceremony, and SHI Dinghuan, President of CRES and Counselor of the State Council, made an opening address.

22 other distinguished guests also attended the opening ceremony, including ZHAO Yuwen, Vice President of CRES and Director of China Photovoltaic Society (CPVS); Prof. Martin Green from University of New South Wales(UNSW); John Smirnow, Vice President of Trade & Competitiveness of Solar Energy Industries Association(SEIA); Dr. Murray Cameron, member of the Board of Directors of European Photovoltaic Industry Association (EPIA); ZHU Gongshan, President of GCL Group; QU Xiaohua, CEO of Canadian Solar and ZHAO Zhiheng, Vice President of YINGLI, etc.

1,523 exhibitors from 92 countries and regions, including Germany, America, Japan, France, Austria, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Belgium, Singapore, Spain and Taiwan, attended the exhibition, which boasted an exhibition space of 150,000 square meters, bringing richer varieties of exhibits, including production equipments of silicon and silicon ingot, devices for wafer cutting and packaging, latest system integration(SI) of large PV projects, multiple forms of distributed PV power stations as well as a great number of products of high-performance, high-efficiency and high-adaptability for new energy application, such as complementation of wind and light, water and light, light and firewood.

The Conference opening ceremony was held in Kerry Hotel Pudong, Shanghai, in the afternoon. Top scientists and professionals from Asia, Europe and America shared their latest research findings, insights into market trends and new technologies with attendees of the session.

It is well-known that SNEC 7th (2013) International Photovoltaic Power Generation Conference & Exhibition [SNEC PV POWER EXPO] was held against a background of constantly changing international PV market. Nevertheless, over 1500 PV exhibitors registered to attend the exhibition. In terms of the number of countries where the exhibitors came from, the varieties of products exhibited and their levels, this exhibition has surpassed those held in the past few years. Highlights and Achievements:

International PV Associations Meeting Held Successfully, Focusing on the Collaborations among Associations and Mutual Development

Jointly convened by Asian Photovoltaic Industry Association (APVIA), European Photovoltaic Industry Association (EPIA) and Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), the International PV Associations Meeting was successfully held on the morning of May 13th in Kerry Hotel Pudong, Shanghai. The meeting was attended by industry associations from China, South Korea, Singapore, Australia, Taiwan, etc.

During the meeting, the associations shared their opinions of the latest market trends, trade issue and how to strengthen cooperation and seek mutual development. They also proposed that the Solar Industry Declaration should be signed by all the industry associations present at the meeting, which will urge governments from all nations to take actions and build a cooperative framework that can prevent and settle trade disputes which may occur in the future.

Solar Leaders Dialogue, Focusing on the Sustainable Growth of the Solar Industry Worldwide


On May 13th, over 20 leaders, entrepreneurs and top scientists representing Asian, European and American photovoltaic industry associations gathered and held a dialogue on sustainable development of PV industry. “Companies who could live through 2013 will laugh last in the following decade.” Dr. Murray Cameron, COO of Phoenix Solar AG, said when talking about global PV market outlook.

With continuous technological progress and growing demand for clean and sustainable energy, solar power generation has been enjoying wider popularity. However, disordered competition has resulted in worthless trade disputes, such as Anti-Dumping and Anti-Subsidy policies proposed or adopted by the U.S. and EU, which has been a big blow to the young PV industry in China. “With global economic integration, trade barrier is nothing but an unwise decision which causes destruction to both sides.” How can PV industry get rid of the disordered competition, walk out of the severe winter and embrace the warm spring of resurgent development? Leaders from around the world provided different suggestions according to different cases.

Asian Photovoltaic Industry Association (APVIA) 4th General Meeting of the 1st Council successfully convened in the Kerry Hotel Pudong, Shanghai on the morning of May 14th. Dr SHI Zhengrong, Chief Chairman of APVIA, hosted the meeting. Attendees include: SHI Dinghuan, President of CRES, Edwin Khew, Chairman of the Steering Committee of APVIA, ZHAO Yuwen, Director of CPVS, WU Jiun-Kuan, Secretary-General of APVIA, Prof. Martin Green, Director of the Australian Centre for Advanced Photovoltaics at UNSW; Prof. Armin Aberle, CEO of SERIS, and Bryan D. Ekus, Managing Director of IPVEA, etc.

The meeting discussed Preparation Progress and Planning of Asia Pacific Solar Institute, APVIA AWARDS and Its Judging Rules and Announcement of Candidates for Chief Chairman and Secretary-General of APVIA. At the end of the meeting, all attendees approved the Solar Industry Declaration unanimously, which urges governments from all nations to take actions and establish a cooperative framework so as to prevent and settle trade disputes that may occur in the future.


SNEC 2013 Scientific Conference -- Latest Technologies and Research Findings Discussed in 8 Sessions

SNEC 2013 Scientific Conference was held on May 15th and 16th, consisting of 8 sessions, where over 50 top experts shared latest technologies and research findings with attendees of the sessions. The topics of the speeches covered the following: polysilicon and wafer, silicon solar cells, silicon modules, PV innovation concepts, films, quality guarantee and surface characteristics, PV systems and smart grid technology.


Global PV Financial Summit -- Dialogue between Financial Institutions and CFOs

On May 15th, the Global PV Financial Summit kicked off, and discussed on the topics of “What does bankability mean in the PV World?”, “Enhanced quality assurance - a key to PV industry growth”, and so on. Representatives from Export-Import Bank of China (EIBC), Sinosure, Minsheng Securities, Credit Suisse, Munich Re and other financial institutions attended this summit and discussed collaboration strategies between PV industry and financial sector.

The Grand View Garden of 10-Year Achievements of PV Industry
The Grand View Garden of 10-Year Achievements of PV Industry was located in the exhibition hall E5. Through plenty of data, words, pictures and objects, the Grand View showed the great path of China’s solar power generation from its preparation, establishment and development to its weathering of turbulence in domestic and international markets, a path full of unrests, rational thinking, greater expectation and support, and new goals.

The Grand View Garden of 10-Year Achievements of PV Industry is also a review of many great events in this sector, collective intelligence and hard work of pioneers, and is an industrial enlightenment for the new generation of Chinese engaged in the PV industry.

SNEC2013 “Top 10 Highlights”
The final result of SNEC2013 “Top 10 Highlights” was announced at 10 a.m. in the media center of Hall E5 in Shanghai New International Expo Center (SNIEC) on May 16th. Having prepared for over 3 months, more than 60 enterprises showcased over 80 exhibits in the expo. More than 40 companies won Terawatt Diamond Award, Gigawatt Golden Award and Megawatt Honor Award respectively. The winners include CSUN QSAR II cells, DuPont™ Solamet® PV18x Silver Photovoltaic Metallization Pastes, and First Solar Series 3 Black Module.

Over a decade of development, novel products and technology came out one after another in solar photovoltaic industry. To select the excellent ones and to gather exhibitors to show their unique products and technologies, SNEC launched an important side event -- Top 10 Highlights Selection. After years of practice, the selection has been widely recognized and well received and has become a major stage for showing new products and technology in the sector.
